The 434th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron welcomed their new commander, Maj. Nathan Lowman during an assumption of command ceremony held on the flightline, October 15, 2022.

The assumption of command ceremony is a military tradition that celebrates both continuity and change through the passing of the guidon from one commander to the next.

The presiding officer was Col. Arianne Mayberry, the 434th Maintenance Group commander.

To begin, Mayberry took a moment to introduce Lowman to the Airmen he would be leading.

“They are maintenance professionals, who rock the mission every day,” Mayberry said. “They make sure those 16 tails out there are in perfect condition, especially for an over 60-year-old airframe. They ensure the safety of those flying them and their work extends the Air Force’s reach exponentially in order to respond to events around the world, and not only are they professional, but they are resilient.”

Because of all these reasons and more, Mayberry said she needed to find an equally awesome commander for the squadron.

“He understands aircraft maintenance and the challenges that our Airmen face out on the flightline while at home and abroad, but his technical expertise is not exactly why I chose him for command…His integrity, dedication and excellence are not just the Air Force’s core values, but are his own. When I spoke to him these were not just taglines or buzzwords, he has put them, and will put them, into action.”

Before the ceremony came to a close, Lowman thanked the attendees and addressed his new command.

“For the men and women of the 434th AMXS,” Lowman said. “I am honored and privilege to be called your commander. I look forward to growing your success, your accolades, and the success of the group and the wing with our hard work and determination. Thank you all for volunteering to be here and a part of this great Air Force. I look forward to working with you.”

Lowman concluded his remarks with a quote from Jack Welch, the former General Electric CEO, “before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.”
