Grissom IG inspection team earn individual, unit awards

The 434th Air Refueling Wing Inspector General inspection team cleaned up during the 2020 Air Force Reserve Command IG Awards.

Out of seven categories, the Grissom Team walked away with three wins, including two individual awards and one unit award.

Senior Master Sgt. Zachary Chapin, 434th ARW IG wing inspections superintendent, won the Enlisted Gen. Howard W. Leaf Category II award.

Chapin earned his award for filling a director role for nine months, completing 26 inspections, four commander’s inspection management boards, two staff assistance visits and earned top marks on 100 percent of requirements, validating mission readiness.

He also administered the commander’s inspection program, identified deficiencies and developed a unit self-assessment program increasing commander visibility of hidden non-compliances.

Daniel DeAngulo, 434th ARW exercise program director, won the Gen. Howard W. Leaf Civilian Category IIB award.

DeAngulo was recognized for executing an Air Force Medical Readiness Agency COVID-19 vaccination tabletop exercise, ensuring viability of three wing plans with additional field training exercise administering 172 flu vaccinations.

He also led the Exercise JADED THUNDER site-survey team, showcasing beddown and operations capabilities, making Grissom the Special Operations Command number one pick for future joint live-fire exercises.

DeAngulo is also considered the exercise planning subject matter expert for 4th Air Force and AFRC, being vital for their policy interpretation and execution continuity.

The team won the Maj. Gen. Junius W. Jones Category II award and is credited for leading two wing joint operations nuclear operation readiness exercises, managing 49 wing inspection team events with 39 trainees, four observations and two jet Alert Repositioning Plans which validated the number one United States Strategic Command mission.

They also developed a suicide postvention tabletop exercise, advancing the Chief of Staff of the Air Force priority for suicide crisis management and preparing senior leadership for post-incident care.

434th ARW is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. The Citizen Airmen from the Hoosier Wing routinely deploy around the world in support of the Air Force mission.
