When it is steaming hot in Miami County, Indiana, its circus time for the town of Peru – and Grissom put its best foot forward for the annual Circus City Parade!
Col. Larry Shaw, 434th Air Refueling Wing commander, along with members of the Grissom Honor Guard, fire department, explosive ordnance disposal unit, and security forces paraded down Main Street and were greeted by thousands of spectators July 20.
“It is great to be a part of this special community,” Shaw said. “The support we get from everyone is incredible, and we’re happy to play a role in celebrating Peru’s rich circus history.”
The annual event attracts visitors from across the county for what Peru calls the only circus heritage parade and the longest running circus parade in the United States.
“Our participation helps project reserve readiness and community involvement,” Shaw said. “It’s all part of being a good neighbor.”
The 434th ARW is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. The Citizen Airmen from the Hoosier Wing routinely deploy around the world in support of the Air Force mission.
