GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. -- Continuing in its tradition of excellence, Grissom was recently named a 2018 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management.
“Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand,” said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it’s through volunteer engagement or public education.”
In order to become a tree city, Grissom had to meet the four standards: having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance.
Grissom has won the accolade 18 years in a row, in addition to numerous Department of Defense awards for environmental excellence.
When properly planted, trees provide multiple benefits to the community such as removing air pollutants and providing wildlife habitats.
“This distinction shows that we have a committed approach to the environment,” said Cory Walters, 434th Environmental Flight chief. “We’re committed to protecting the environment and sustainability, year after year.”
The 434th ARW is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. The Citizen Airmen from the Hoosier Wing routinely deploy around the world in support of the Air Force mission.
