434th ARW Airmen earn AF, Navy commendation medals Published Jan. 12, 2011 GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. -- Several of the 434th Air Refueling Wing's officers and noncommissioned officers were recently awarded with commendation medals. Seven of the medals were Air Force Commendation Medals. One was a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. The Air Force variant of medal was authorized by the Secretary of the Air Force James Douglas on March 28, 1958, for award to members of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving in any capacity with the Air Force, distinguished themselves by meritorious achievement and service. The Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal is awarded by operational commanders, for those who have distinguished themselves by heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service.
