The 434th Air Refueling Wing often claims to be the best, and now the unit has the hardware to back it up!

The 4th Air Force Raincross Trophy is given to the best wing in the Numbered Air Force and that trophy now resides at Grissom.

Grissom received the award Nov. 21 during a ceremony at March Air Reserve Base, California, for its outstanding contributions to the Air Force mission.

“Capt. Erica Morgan, my executive officer, did a great job of collecting data and putting a fantastic package together to highlight our accomplishments,” said Col. Larry Shaw, 434th ARW commander. “She really made the spotlight shine upon us!”

Between Oct. 1, 2017, and Sept. 30, 2018, Grissom deployed 637 Reserve Citizen Airmen in support of Operation Inherent Resolve and Operation Freedom Sentinel. This resulted in 578 sorties, offloading over 60 million pounds of fuel over the course of 5,300 flight hours.

Additionally, the unit deliverer unparalleled support within 4th Air Force, expediting periodic inspections for three sister units, correcting 480 deficiencies and isolating 7 aircraft discrepancies.

The newly formed 49th Aerial Port Squadron executed Arctic Care within a 30-day notice, resulting in 112,000 pounds of cargo that provided aid to over 7,000 villagers, along with the Denton Humanitarian Operation that delivered 135,000 pounds of clothing and food to two third-world countries.

The 434th Logistic Readiness Squadron won the 2017 Dedalain Maj. Gen. W. Carter Logistics Effectiveness Award for the expedition of $9 million in aircraft parts and exceeded their mission capable rate by 13 percent, which also contributed to the 434th’s selection for the Raincross Trophy.

Finally, the Development and Training Flight produced 85 graduates and maintained a zero wash-out rate, saving the Air Force $866,000.

“I’m so proud of every part of Team Grissom -- from our Airmen and NCOs to officers, civilians, contractors, spouses, family and employers.” said Shaw. “It takes everyone’s work and support to shine as brightly as we do.”

The 434th ARW is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. The Citizen Airmen from the Hoosier Wing routinely deploy around the world in support of the Air Force mission.
