Lt. Col. Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom
Lt. Col. Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom was one of NASA's original seven Mercury astronauts and the first man to fly in space twice. He died Jan. 27, 1967, in the Apollo 1 fire at Cape Kennedy, Fla. Grissom Air Reserve Base, Ind., is named in his honor. (NASA photo)
