Grissom is scheduled to begin releasing the first of six series showcasing the 434th Air Refueling Wing's after-dark mission this summer.

The first series will give an up-close perspective of the training and mission conducted by Grissom's fire department.

"The mission at Grissom never stops," said Col. Douglas Schwartz, 434th ARW commander. "We maintain a 24/7/365 police department, fire department and command post in addition to several other organizations that work late hours to support our flying mission."

Subsequent stories in the series are scheduled to follow including Grissom's security forces, command post, aircraft maintenance, flight operations and air traffic control.

These stories will provide a closer look at what it takes for Grissom to remain a self-contained combat ready unit with the responsibility of operating and maintaining the base

"The mission doesn't stop after the sun sets," Schwartz added.

The 434th Air Refueling Wing regularly participates in exercises and front-line operations to support America's national interests, and must remain mission ready at all times.

"'Grissom after Dark' will shed light on a mission that often-times goes unseen," concluded Tech. Sgt. Douglas Hays, 434th Air Refueling Wing public affairs superintendent.

Grissom is home to the 434th Air Refueling Wing, the largest KC-135 Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command, as well as three Army Reserve units. Airmen, Soldiers and Marines routinely deploy from Grissom around the world in support of the Department of Defense mission and U.S. strategic objectives.
