GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, IN – The arrival of a driving simulator and virtual reality system to the Hoosier Wing marks a new chapter in Airmen’s training that will increase access to training, bolstering overall mission readiness.

The 434th Maintenance Group and the 434th Logistics Readiness Squadron set up 12 virtual reality training systems at Grissom, June 23-24, alongside a newly installed driving simulator.

The VR systems, provided by Mass Virtual, will allow for immersive training experiences with KC-135R Stratotanker maintenance, guiding Airmen through 31 learning modules that cover various tasks such as hot-pit refueling and preflight operations. They will also provide training on nine ground vehicles, including staircase and fuel truck operations.

The 434th LRS also recently installed a Doron driving simulator capable of providing realistic training on a multitude of different vehicles, situations, and conditions. This technology takes away risk of injury or damage for Airmen who are learning or refreshing their skills, as well as saving fuel and maintenance operating costs.

“Right now, our biggest challenge is time to properly train our Airmen,” said Technical Sgt. Bonnie Verdiguel, group training manager assigned to the 434th Maintenance Group. “I am very excited to see how access to more training options will improve our members’ proficiency.”

Although it is not a replacement for hands-on training, the Mass Virtual and Doron systems can provide key supplemental experience with many advantages. It allows Airmen to safely train for high-risk tasks and eliminates risk of injury or damage. And while factors such as aircraft or part availability, weather, and resources may limit in-person training, these immersive technology systems circumvent these issues, allowing Airmen to get as much training as they need to build and maintain job proficiency.

These systems are available for Airmen across the base to train with, from those operating heavy machinery to those who would like experience operating in Mission Oriented Protective Posture gear, notes Andrea Estes, 434th LRS transportation accountable officer.

The Heartland Warrior team continues to develop and implement innovative training solutions to enhance combat capabilities and strengthen overall mission readiness.
