Newell retires after 20 year career Published April 15, 2007 GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind -- Air Force Reserve Master Sgt. Timothy A. Newell of Logansport, Ind., was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal and a retirement certificate signed by President George Bush during a special retirement ceremony at Grissom ARB on April 14. Joining him for the retirement ceremony was his wife Elizabeth and children Eric and Abigail. Sergeant Newell had served his country for 20 years during a military career that included both the Army and Air Force. He enlisted in the Indiana Army National Guard in 1987 and served as a combat medic and squad leader with units in Lafayette and Indianapolis. In 1995 he transferred to the Air Force Reserve Command, initially serving as a medic with the 434th Medical Squadron. Three years later he transition to the Family Support Office where he provided assistance to family members of deployed Air Force personnel. In response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, he volunteered to serve two months in the Grissom Family Support Office and was later mobilized, spending more than 14 months on continuous active duty. At the time of his retirement, Sergeant Newell was the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge of the Family Support Office. His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon. Sergeant Newell graduated with distinction from Purdue University with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology in 1993. In his civilian occupation, he is a senior software engineer at Attero Tech, LLC, in Fort Wayne, Ind.
