Cox promoted to colonel, is new vice commander

Air Force Reservist Timothy L. Cox of Peru, Ind., was promoted to the rank of colonel and assumed the duties of 434th Air Refueling Wing Vice Commander during a special ceremony at Grissom ARB. 

As vice commander, he is responsible for assisting with the management, training, and command and control of one of the key aerial refueling wings in the Air Force Reserve Command. 

Colonel Cox began his Air Force career in 1981 after receiving his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Indiana University. After graduating from Undergraduate Pilot Training at Vance Air Force Base, Okla., he attended KC-135 Combat Crew Training at Castle Air Force Base, Calif. 

In 1983 he was assigned to the 909th Air Refueling Squadron, Kadena Air Base, Japan, where he served as a KC-135 co-pilot and aircraft commander. He transferred to the 64th Flying Training Wing at Reese Air Force Base, Texas, where he was a T-38 instructor pilot, academic instructor, class commander and wing safety officer. 

Colonel Cox transferred to the Air Force Reserve Command in 1989 and became a KC-135 aircraft commander, instructor pilot, evaluator pilot and flight commander at Grissom Air Reserve Base, Ind. 

He has flown missions in support of Operations Enduring freedom and Iraqi Freedom. 

He is a command pilot and has more than 4,500 flying hours in such aircraft as the T-38, and various models of the KC-135 Stratotanker. His military professional education includes Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College. 

The colonel's major military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Combat Readiness Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Kuwait Liberation Medal
