GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind., -- Jay Salmons, a firefighter with the Grissom fire department, demonstrates how to test a smoke detector at the Grissom Inn. Fire prevention week is underway, and there will be a series of training including fire evacuation and fire extinguisher training. People can test their detectors by simply blowing out a lit match or candle and allowing the smoke to enter the detector vents. The state of Indiana advocates that all homes be equipped with photoelectric or dual sensor smoke alarms which, according to the fire marshal, provide better overall protection than the more popular ionization smoke alarm.
