Services competes for Hennessy Trophy Published Dec. 3, 2007 By Senior Airman Carl Berry 434th ARW/ Public Affairs GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind., -- The 434th Services Flight is competing for the John L. Hennessy Trophy for the first time in Grissom Air Reserve Base history. For the past 51 years, the Hennessy Trophy has been presented to the United States Air Force installations judged to have the best food-service programs. "This is something that we have wanted to do for a long time but we did not have the resources," said Master Sgt. Sandra Humphrey, 434th SVF dining hall manager. "Now that we have our own facility, are compliant with a world wide menu, and have the approval of 4th Air Force, we are able to enter the competition optimistically," said Sergeant Humphrey. In preparation for the competition the service flight members are simply doing what they have always done and that is showing excellence in all they do. "Usually first time entries do not win the trophy but we plan on doing the impossible and winning our first year," added Sergeant Humphrey. "To do this we are going to need the help of all members of Grissom. The best way to help us is to stagger the times that you (units) eat." "Winning the Hennessy Trophy not only makes Services look good, but flows to the wing and up to 4th Air Force," said Master Sgt. Timothy Wood, 434th SVF afternoon manager. The judging is conducted by distinguished members of the wider food service community, including representatives from both commercial and noncommercial segments, who travel around the world to tour and evaluate the competing operations. The winner will be announced in March. The winners of the competition are then invited to the McCormick Place in Chicago for the annual Global Food & Style Expo.
