The USO sponsored United Through Reading program came to Grissom on August 2, 2017.

The program allows service members to record a video of themselves reading a children’s book then send the book and the recording to their family so they can still be a part of their child’s life even while away from home.

The goal of the program is to help families stay connected even when one parent is away.

“United Through Reading is all about helping families stay connected,” said Sarah Huber, USO volunteer. “This program is good for non-custodial parents, drill weekends, annual tour or any other time the parent might be away.”

Tech. Sgt. Jeffrey Johnson, 434th Maintenance Squadron nondestructive inspection craftsman, read a book for his daughter because it will help him be a part of her life even if he isn’t at home.

“This is good for my daughter to look at whenever I’m gone,” said Johnson. “I think it is something she will really enjoy.”

The program is available at nearly 90 USO locations worldwide and is entirely free to service members and their families.

More information can be found on the USO’s website.
