Boy Scouts from Kokomo and Marion had a chance to tour Grissom Air Reserve Base, Ind., July 27.

The Scouts began their tour at Grissom's Fire Department before touring a static display of a KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft.

While at the Fire Department, the scouts got to learn more about the equipment used by the department and some of the day-to-day activities that the job entails.

“All the kids were very impressed,” said David Watanabe, a volunteer for Kokomo Boy Scout Troop. “They enjoyed the fire station and getting to try out the gear.”

Outside the Scouts were allowed to board a refueling tanker and see what Grissom aircraft are all about.

“Everyone absolutely enjoyed the tour,” said Watanabe. “The only thing that would have made it even better was taking us up in the air.”

Tech. Sgt. Eddie Stapp, a 434th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief, said he feels that allowing people the opportunity to visit the base is important so that they can see what the Air Force actually does.

“Tours like this are great for community relations,” said Stapp. “They allow us to build relationships with the community and they allow kids to get an idea of what the Air Force actually does.”

Watanabe extended his thanks to those involved in making the tour happen for the Scouts.

“You all were patient and answered a lot of questions,” he said. “Thanks to everyone.”

Grissom offers tours to qualified groups on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month as part of a community outreach program.

Those interested in scheduling a tour should contact Public Affairs at 765-688-3340.

The 434th ARW is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. Men and women from the Hoosier Wing routinely deploy around the world in support of the Air Force mission.
