When a disaster strikes, the Air Force wants to be able to account for Airmen and make sure they and their families have what they need.

Doing so, in a timely manner is no small task, which is where the Air Force Personnel Accountability and Assessment System comes into play.

"AFPAAS allows the Air Force to account for all members and dependents affected by a disaster by using one system," said Staff Sgt. Christie Kurka, 434th Force Support Squadron installation personnel readiness chief. "This allows the Air Force to offer assistance as needed to affected members in an expedient manner."

All Air Force personnel, both military and civilian, will need to access AFPAAS in the event of a wide-spread catastrophic event such as tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes, blizzards, typhoons, wildfires and terrorist attacks, said Kurka.

Once a unit is tasked with accountability, Airmen have 48 hours to account for themselves and their dependents.

AFPAAS standardizes a method for the Air Force to account, assess, manage and monitor the recovery and reconstitution process for personnel and their families affected and/or scattered by a wide-spread catastrophic event.

The system provides information to all levels of the Air Force chain of command, allowing commanders to make strategic decisions which facilitate a return to stability.

Here are the steps to completing accountability for Airmen and their dependents:

- Go to the website at https://afpaas.af.mil and click on the "click here" under airmen/civilians.

- Sign on using a common access card, username and password, or personal information.

- Select the appropriate option from the menu the corresponds to the disaster.

- Verify and update location and contact information.

- Complete a needs assessment survey.

After this process is completed, if an Airman needs assistance, a case manager will contact them.
