Navy Junior ROTC cadets get Air Force experience at Grissom

GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind., --  One of the purposes of junior ROTC is to introduce students to military service, but nothing compares to getting a first-hand look.

Thirty Navy Junior ROTC cadets from Anderson High School, Anderson, Ind., got a look at how the Air Force operates during a tour here Sept. 9.

The students, mostly first-year members of the program, got briefings on the ins-and outs of the KC-135R Stratotanker during a static display.

The Anderson Navy Junior ROTC has visited the base before, and retired Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Outcalt, the Junior ROTC commander, said he thinks the tours are beneficial because the students have an opportunity to interact with people currently serving in the military.

"They get to look at different careers and experience the military way of life," said Outcalt.

Historically half of Junior ROTC graduates from Anderson go into the military after high school.

To round out the tour, members of Detachment 1, Communication Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 45, 4th Marine Logistics Group, gave the cadets an overview of the Marine Corps martial arts program.

Marines showed the students different striking techniques before engaging in several grappling match demonstrations.

The 434th ARW is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command.
