KOKOMO, Ind. -- Airmen, families, and community partners gathered at the Bel Air in Kokomo, Indiana, to celebrate the United States Air Force’s 77th birthday during the Grissom Air Reserve Base Air Force Ball. The evening blended tradition, history, and camaraderie, honoring both the service’s proud heritage and its future.
The night’s guest speaker, Sgt. Maj. Lance Nutt, USMC (Retired), delivered an impassioned address focused on service, sacrifice, and community. Drawing on his decades of experience in the Marine Corps, Nutt reflected on the shared values across branches and emphasized the importance of unity in a world that increasingly demands resilience and readiness.
“No matter what uniform we’ve worn, we share the same calling—to serve something greater than ourselves,” said Nutt. “The Air Force Ball is more than a celebration; it’s a reminder of the people and traditions that have carried us forward for generations.”
Col. Michael Albert, 434th Air Refueling Wing commander, also addressed the audience, praising the dedication of Grissom’s Airmen and their families.
“This is an amazing family,” Albert said. “You are the kindest, most loyal, and professional group I’ve ever worked with. I’m so lucky to serve with you. I know how much you sacrifice, and I’m grateful for your selfless service to our country. You make the 434th and Grissom the best base in the Air Force.”
A Legacy of Service at Grissom
Formerly known as Bunker Hill Air Base during World War II, Grissom Air Reserve Base was renamed in 1968 to honor Lt. Col. Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, one of America’s original Mercury astronauts and an Indiana native who lost his life in the Apollo 1 tragedy. Since then, Grissom has served as one of only five Air Force Reserve Command bases in the nation, playing a pivotal role in air refueling, combat support, and joint force training.
The 434th Air Refueling Wing, often called the “Hoosier Wing,” is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve. Its mission ensures global reach for U.S. and allied forces, making possible everything from humanitarian missions to combat operations.
Honoring Tradition Through the Air Force Ball
The Air Force Ball traces its origins back to 1947, when the service was established as an independent branch. Each year, bases around the globe commemorate the Air Force’s birthday through the ball, bringing together Airmen, families, retirees, and local leaders. Steeped in tradition—such as the formal toasts, the presentation of colors, and the ceremonial cutting of the cake—the ball serves as a moment of reflection and unity.
For Grissom Airmen, this year’s event also highlighted the importance of community. Local civic leaders, employers, and veterans joined in the celebration, reinforcing the strong bond between the base and the surrounding region.
“We are stronger together,” Albert noted. “The Air Force Ball reminds us that while missions may change, the traditions, values, and people at the heart of this service remain the same.”
Albert closed with a smile, encouraging attendees to enjoy the evening’s festivities:
