GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. -- Indiana legislators got a firsthand look at two of the state’s military aviation units May 29 as part of a plan to educate them and foster future partnerships.
Indiana state representatives and area economic development agencies gathered at Grissom for mission briefings from both the 434th Air Refueling Wing and the 122nd Fighter Wing commanders.
“As citizen Airmen, we cannot do our job without the support of the American people and our communities,” said Col. Van Thai, 434th Air Refueling Wing commander. “It is important to connect with the leaders that the people have voted for to showcase that Grissom and Indiana play a key role in the Nations’ Defense.”
Following the briefings, nine elected representatives participated in an aerial refueling mission between a 434th Air Refueling Wing KC-135R Stratotanker and a 122nd Fighter Wing F-16 Fighting Falcon.
The legislators were joined by both the 434th ARW and 122nd FW commanders and command chief’s so the dialogue could continue.
“What an amazing experience”, said Rep. Stacey Donato, IN-18. “This really reminds me of the importance of reading and education. All the instruments and knowledge required to perform the refueling mission is spectacular.”
The educating didn’t end when the wheels touched back down at Grissom. Guests were taken to Dock 1, where base agencies were able to interact on a one-one one basis. Members of the explosive ordnance disposal team, maintenance, family support, fire department, security forces, aircrew flight equipment and Marine Corps each set displays to interact with guests.
From there, the group went to lunch where they dined with Airmen and civilians, allowing them to connect, and interact with base employees from all levels.
“Our Airmen are the driving force that keeps the mission moving, so it’s extremely important for the representatives to have an opportunity to hear their concerns and get a better insight of the base from their perspective,” said Chief Master Sergeant Noel Price, 434th ARW command chief. “Not only does this help foster relationships, but it also helps representatives fight for the needs of Indiana service members and veterans.”
To conclude the event visitors were presented with a ‘Rock-n the Mish’ lithograph showing the wing’s gratitude for their commitment to learn more about the base and advocate for the future of Indiana’s Hoosier Wing.
“We are grateful to have our state legislators who support the Air Force mission and took time out of their busy schedule to come witness the great things our Citizen Airmen are doing here in the Heartland,” said Thai. “We look forward to working with them to ensure a positive relationship for the base and community.”
