During a formal ceremony at Grissom Air Reserve Base, Indiana, command of the 434th Force Support Squadron was transferred from Lt. Col. Lesley Myer to Lt. Col. Andrea L. Barker on October 5, 2024.

Barker comes to the 434th FSS from her previous assignment at the Pentagon as an individual mobilization augmentee.

Col. David Borden, 434th Mission Support Group commander, presided over the ceremony formally transferring command between the two officers.

During Borden’s remarks he spoke words of advice and encouragement to Barker. “I think being a squadron commander is probably the best job in the Air Force,” said Borden “I think you’re going to do great things.”

Borden explained that the 434th FSS is a diverse and exceptional squadron and charged Barker with the responsibility of developing them for the future needs of the mission. “I do ask one thing of you and that’s to take care of your airmen,” said Borden. “Get them prepared because you never know when they’re going to be called.”

Myers also took a moment to speak to her former squadron before relinquishing command.

“The FSS is the lifeblood of the wing,” said Myer. “During our time together each one of you demonstrated just that, with exceptional dedication, resilience and teamwork. From the full-time support to the traditional reservists, you have the biggest hearts.”

Following Borden’s and Myers speeches, the official party performed the passing of the guidon, which symbolizes transfer of authority from one commander to the next. The 434th FSS and their new commander exchanged salutes then Barker addressed the attendees.

“This is a great time to serve in the greatest Air Force in the world, as we reoptimize for the great power competition and just get back to making sure we’re all trained up,” said Barker. “I promise to give you my very best every day and empower you to complete our mission and I promise to encourage you to be the very best that you can be."

She concluded her speech with gratitude towards the Airmen she would be leading.

"What you do matters and I appreciate and thank you for everything that you've accomplished so far and the things you will accomplish in the future," said Barker. "I'm honored to be your commander and excited to continue to meet you all and excited to get to work."
