While it may be summer now, Marines are thinking and planning ahead to Christmas and the annual Toys for Tots drive.

To get the ball rolling, the Albert E. Shockey Detachment of the Marine Corps League, in conjunction with Detachment 1 Communications Company at Grissom, will sponsor the fifth annual John W. Ladd Memorial Toys for Tots Charity Golf Outing.

The shot-gun start event tees off at 8 a.m. Aug. 11 at the Chippendale Golf Course in Kokomo.

Four-person teams will compete in a best ball format. The cost is $50 per person or $200 per team.

All the proceeds benefit the Toys for Tots program.

In 2006, more than 5,900 children from Miami, Cass, Fulton, Grant, Howard, Tipton, Wabash, and White counties received some of the 23,000 gifts that were donated or purchased through funds raised in programs such as this golf outing.
