Honorary commanders to help Grissom celebrate Arbor Day

  • Published
Eight new trees will be added to the Grissom landscape as part of the base's annual Arbor Day tree-planting ceremony.  The new trees will join more than 3,700 already on the base as part of Grissom's  urban forestry program.

Grissom's honorary commanders, along with the 434th Air Refueling Wing commander, will take part in the Arbor Day festivities.  The new trees will be planted near the Wing Headquarters Building on Grissom Avenue.

Trees are an important part of the Grissom ARB environment and the base has been named as a "Tree City" by the National Arbor Day Foundation for 11 consecutive years.  To be named a tree city, a community must meet certain standards to include a public tree care ordinance, a formal program to manage and care for the trees, and an Arbor Day ceremony.

"The base recycling program and Tree City are two of the many things we do to protect the environment," said Mr. Corey Walters, a biological scientist with the 434th Air Refueling Wing.  "These help keep the environment healthy for current and future personnel working on Base and living in the surrounding community."
