Grissom honors Doc Evens today Published May 14, 2012 434th ARW Public Affairs GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. -- Grissom will hold a special street naming ceremony in honor of Col. Marvin A. "Doc" Evens today. Evens was a former 930th Medical Squadron commander here at Grissom and an A-10 pilot who perished when his A-10 crashed during a training mission near the base in 1992. The special ceremony will be held in Gus Grissom Hall and will conclude with the unveiling of "Doc Evens Avenue" just outside. The ceremony will also include an unveiling of a special memorial lithograph that will hang in the 434th Aerospace Medicine Squadron building as well as special comments from Patrick Evens, son of Col. Evens; retired Maj. Gen. Robert A. Nester; Col. William T. "Tim" Cahoon, 434th Air Refueling Wing commander; and retired Chief Master Sgt. Mary Stamper. The 930th Tactical Fighter Group was one of two Air Force Reserve units stationed at Grissom Air Force Base in the 1990s. The 930th TFG eventually merged with the 434th ARW shortly after the base was realigned as an air reserve base.
