5K runners try to match their predictions

Not all races are determined by who finishes first.

This was never truer as servicemembers and civilians participated in a predict-a-time 5K run here April 16.

And, while she wasn't the first to finish, Debra Wilson-Strong took home first place with a time of 30 minutes and three seconds -- just four seconds off her pre-race prediction of 29:59.

In this type of event, runners must predict what their finish time will be and run without the aid of a watch or other timing device.

"The time prediction run allows everyone to be competitive," said Bruce Cannady, 434th Force Support Squadron fitness center technician and event organizer. "You don't have to be the fastest to win - you just have to know your pace."

Wilson-Strong may have had the winning time, but the fastest runner was Javier Medina, who finished the run in 22:14, just 14 seconds off his predicted time of 22:00.

In all, 21 runners took part in the run.

The next base 5K is scheduled for May 10.
