Lafayette Boy Scout Troop visits Grissom Published June 29, 2018 By Senior Airman Cali Elliott 434 ARW Public Affairs GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. -- The Boy Scout motto is to always be prepared; being in a state of readiness, and for one troop, they got to see just how Grissom does just that. Boy Scouts from Lafayette, Indiana Troop 3339 had the chance to tour Grissom Air Reserve Base, Indiana, June 27. The scouts began their tour with a KC-135 Stratotanker. Aircrew and crew chiefs gave them a full tour, including going into the cockpit, seeing the boom pod and learning about the mechanics of the aircraft.“This is just an awesome experience for these boys to get out here and learn what their local Air Force base does,” said Gielda Spencer, a local CNA work leader and troop chaperone. “I would have never guessed that we would have been able to do and see as much as we did today; it was an overall amazing experience.”“The cockpit and seeing what the pilots do was really awesome,” said Corbin Bollhoefer, a scout for Troop 3339.The scouts then made their way to Grissom Fire Department, where they saw the fire trucks, equipment and the living quarters of the department. Master Sgt. Brian Achenbach, a 434th MXAA Aircraft Generator, said he feels that allowing people the opportunity to visit the base is important so they can see what the Air Force does and the importance of the mission.“It’s a great opportunity to get to connect with the community,” Achenbach said. “It allows us to build good relationships and really show them what we do.”Those interested in scheduling a tour should contact Public Affairs at 765-688-3348.The 434th ARW is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command.
