The 434th Maintenance Group put the screws to the 434th Security Forces 36-28 to claim the 2018 basketball crown April 7 at the Grissom Fitness Center.

The Maintainers cruised through the tournament to take home the trophy after dispatching of the loser’s bracket rival SF Defenders.

The maintainers brought a full crew to the game, which lead to balanced scoring for the most part.

“We had enough for two full benches,” said Richard Zeiger, MXG team member. “I had five points and most of the team was pretty balanced scoring wise.”

Those bench numbers may or may not have helped overcome the Defenders, but late game turnovers took the cops out.

“Ryan Reese had three or four lay ups down the stretch to finish the game,” Zeiger said.

Grissom’s annual hardwood classic is broken up over several unit training assemblies with teams from Grissom tipping off to earn bragging rights and trophies.

“What a great way to build morale and camaraderie,” said Col. Larry Shaw, 434th Air Refueling Wing commander.

The basketball tournament is the biggest participation event the fitness center offers.

The 434th ARW is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. The Citizen Airmen from the Hoosier Wing routinely deploy around the world in support of the Air Force mission.
