Independence Day is an eventful holiday to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Cookouts, festivities and fireworks are what make this holiday filled with fun for the whole family and with that fun, comes the potential for hazards to be aware of.

“Everyone needs to have a safety mindset this holiday as we have had multiple injuries Air Force-wide already that could have been prevented if injured personnel had used proper risk management,” said Johnny Armes, 434th Air Refueling Wing occupational safety manager.

Below is a list Armes advises to do to ensure safety while enjoying the holiday:

• Be aware of burn and fire hazards around the grill, pets included.

• Never grill indoors or in a closed area.

• Ensure grill is always supervised.

• Allow ample time for food to cook and check temperatures.

• Never give fireworks to children.

• Never point a firework at anyone.

• Keep water nearby in case of accidental fire.

• Store fireworks in a cool dry environment.

• Advise children while using sparklers.

• If hiking/camping, never travel alone.

• Pack extra gear, water and food in case of emergency.

• When outdoors, wear sunscreen.
