Grissom celebrates Washington's Birthday
GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. -- Grissom celebrates Washington's Birthday Feb. 20. Though sometimes referred to as Presidents Day, the official declaration made by Congress refers to the day as Washington's Birthday. Each year since 1862, as many federal government employees get the day off, the U.S. Senate gathers to hear a reading of George Washington's Farewell Address on or near the first U.S. President's birthday. 2/20/2012 - GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind.  -- Even after two horses were shot from under him and his coat had been riddled with bullet holes, one man, a Virginian, fought against insurmountable odds.

For his bravery and coolness under fire during the French and Indian War, George Washington was lauded as a war hero and went on to become one of America's most effective military leaders and statesmen.

To honor Washington, one of the most influential men in American history and the first President of the United States, Grissom celebrates George Washington's Birthday Feb. 20.

Though some refer to the third Monday in February as Presidents Day, the official federal holiday declared by Congress in 1885 is Washington's Birthday.

During this time, while many federal employees get the day off, the U.S. Senate remembers the first president by gathering for the reading of Washington's Farwell Address. A complete transcript of the address can be found by clicking here.

Grissom is home to the 434th Air Refueling Wing, which is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. Airmen and Aircraft from the 434th ARW routinely deploy around the world in support of the Air Force mission and U.S. strategic objectives.
