9/17/2012 - GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. -- "We the People," is a phrase of just three words that laid the foundation of a country that has been a beacon of hope and prosperity around the globe for more than 200 years.

That phrase and the words that follow it in the Constitution of the United States is celebrated today, Constitution Day, by those at Grissom and by Americans around the world.

On Sept. 17, 1787, 39 Constitutional Convention delegates met to sign the world's longest surviving written charter of government, which set up the federal constitutional republic Americans enjoy today.

One of the biggest factors in the long-term success of the Constitution is its ability to be amended to meet the changing needs of a nation throughout the generations. This ability to grow and evolve is the reason the Constitution is referred to as a living document.

The first three articles of the Constitution detail a system of checks and balances within the government to protect the people from tyranny and keep the government for the people and by the people.

Article I details the powers and roles of Congress, Article II lays out the framework for the Executive Branch of government led by the president, and Article III sets up the judicial system topped by the Supreme Court.
