7/20/2012 - GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind.  -- Millions of Muslim Americans, along with approximately 1.5 billion Muslims around the world, celebrate Ramadan, a holy month of fasting, reflection and charity.

Ramadan falls at different times of the year according to the difference between the lunar calendar and the Western solar calendar. This year the month spans from July 20 until August 19.

During this time, many Muslims totally abstain from food, drink and other physical needs during daylight hours as a way to help them reflect on their lives and God, as well as rid themselves of imposing habits, thus teaching them discipline and self control for the remaining months of the year.

Each night after sunset, Muslims have special meals called iftars to break their fast.

Ramadan Mubarak, meaning blessed Ramadan, and Ramadan Kareem, meaning generous Ramadan, are greetings used by those celebrating the month.

Grissom is home to not only the 434th Air Refueling Wing, the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command, but also a diverse group of Airmen, Soldiers and Marines that encompass a number of different faiths including Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhist, Wiccan and more.

Stay connected with Grissom on Twitter and Facebook.

Ramadan Kareem!
